This poem is written in the model of the Italian sonnet that has fourteen lines divided as octave and sestet. The poet explores the inherent futility of war. This theme is expressed in the contrasting images of a bountiful nature as background and the tragic death of a young soldier in the midst of nature's spendour.

A small green valley where a slow stream flows
And leaves long strands of silver on the bright
Grass, from the mountain top stream the Sun's
Rays, they fill the hollow full of light.

A soldier, very young, lies open-mouthed,
A pillow made of fern beneath his head,
Asleep, stretched in the heavy undergrowth,
Pake in his warm, green, sun-soaked bed

His feet among the flowers, he sleeps. His smile
Is like an infant's- gentle, without guile.
Ah, Nature, keep him warm, he may catch cold.
The humming insects don't disturb his rest,'
He sleeps in sunlight, one hand on his breast,'
At peace. In his side there are two red holes.

❐ Introduction to the Poem:

Date of Composition : ' Asleep in the Valley may be written either after the Franco - Prussian war of 1870 or in 1877 when France was engaged in war with Russia . Rimbaud was very young when he wrote the poem . Rimbaud was born in 1854 .
Character : A youthful soldier is the only character in the poem . He sleeps , never to wake up again , in a beautiful sunlit valley .
Theme : The theme is the uselessness and destruction ( āĻĄেāϏ্āϟ্āϰাāĻ•āĻļāύ ) of warfare ( āĻ“āϝ়াāϰāĻĢেāϝ়াāϰ ) . A soldier after enduring the exhaustion ( āĻāĻ—āϜāĻļāύ ) of a war , sleeps in a beautiful valley . Here sleep is a metaphor for death . The soldier's sleep will never break as he has become a victim of war .
Form : The poem is written in sonnet form . It consists of two stanzas of four lines each and two stanzas of three lines each . The poem is a Petrarchan sonnet . Petrarch was an Italian poet . He wrote sonnets that were divided into two parts : the first group of eight lines is called Octave and the next group of six lines is called Sestet .
Contrasts : The poem is built upon a number of contrasts . The beautiful hollow ( 2 ) of the valley is contrasted with the two dreadful holes made by bullets . Again the cold of death is contrasted with the warmth ( ) of the sun and the abundant ( āĻ…্āϝাāĻŦাāύāĻĄাāύ্āϟ ) growth of plants in the valley . The grass and the stream contrast with the lifeless soldier . The youthful soldier and his smile like that of a child are contrasted with the sadness of death .
Use of Images : The poet uses a number of images to describe the beautiful picture of the valley . The valley is described as a hollow . The river that flows through the valley spreads like a silver rug ( āϰাāĻ— ) . The bed of grass where the soldier is lying is described as soaked ( CIP ) with sunlight . The ferns ( āĻĢাāϰ্āύāϏ্ ) provide a pillow ( āĻĒিāϞো ) for the dead soldier . Such images are not only ornamental ( āĻ…āϰ্āύাāĻŽেāύ্āϟাāϞ ) but also functional .
Background : The poem ' Asleep in the Valley is a poem written either in 1870 or in 1877. The occasion of the poem is the Franco - Prussian war of 1870 or the Franco Russian war of 1877. In 1876 Rimbaud was a soldier of the Dutch Colonial Army . He might have seen a soldier lying dead , while going through a valley .

❐ Substance of the Poem:

Octave Part : It is a green valley surrounded by high mountains . A stream flows softly as if it spreads silver · ribbons ( āϰিāĻŦāύāϏ্ ) on the grass . As the sun shines from the top of the mountain , the sunrays fill up the valley with its brightness . A young soldier sleeps open - mouthed with a pillow made of ferns . He appears to be taking a nap and the bushes and plants of the valley prepare his green bed which has absorbed the energy of the sun .
Sestet Part : The feet of the soldier are among the flowers , which grow abundantly in the valley . In his sleep he appears pale ( āĻĒেāϞ ) but smiling innocently like a child . Nature lovingly cradles ( āĻ•েāϞ্āϏ্ ) him and provides the necessary heat to keep him warm and protect him from the cold . The buzzing ( āĻŦাāϜিং ) sound of insects does not affect his sleep . He appears to be sleeping peacefully with his one hand on his chest . However , when viewed closely , it is seen that there are two deep bullet wounds in the side of his body .

❐ Central Idea of the Poem:

The poem ' Asleep in the Valley ' is a translation of the verse ' Le Dormeur du Val ' which Rimbaud wrote either in 1870 or in 1877. The poem belongs to the genre ( āϜঁāϰ ) of anti - war ( āĻ…্āϝাāύ্āϟি - āĻ“āϝ়াāϰ ) poems . A soldier is found asleep in a valley covered with grass . The sun shines brightly . The young soldier is lying open - mouthed under the sky . He looks pale but has an innocent smile on his face while he appears to sleep . However , the soldier is actually dead and two red holes are seen in his side . This unfortunate ( āφāĻĢāϰāϚুāύেāϟ ) death of the soldier comes as a rude ( āϰুāĻĄ ) shock ( āĻļāĻ• ) . The valley , filled with light and bubbling ( āĻŦাāĻŦāϞিং ) with life is seen in sharp contrast with the dead soldier . He is one of the victims of war and the picture of him lying dead in the lap of nature causes a sharp pain and gives rise to anger among the readers . The calm scene of the valley and the feeling of despair at the unfortunate and untimely death of the soldier are most prominent ( āĻĒ্āϰāĻŽিāύেāύ্āϟ ) . They show that even nature cannot protect people from the harmful effects of war . The dead soldier sleeps well after the hardships that he had to undergo during the war . His sleep can never be broken . The grim inevitability ( āχāύāĻāĻিāϟেāĻŦিāϞিāϟি ) of war shows a of anxiety ( āĻ…্āϝাংāϜাāχāϟি ) that is experienced ( āĻāĻ•্āϏāĻĒিāϰিāϝ়েāύ্āϏāĻĄ্ ) by the poet , who had a first hand acquaintance ( āφāĻ•োāϝ়েāύāϟেāύ্āϏ ) with war.
