Tolstoy is considered to be the greatest novelist of all time . He is great because he lets his characters grow and change . His world is large , and his characters have their own life . Three Questions ' is Leo Tolstoy's masterful short story . The three questions that occurred to the Tsar are not important to him only , they are equally important to every one of us . The story points out the basic reality of life . The questions of the Tsar help us to understand the true meaning of our lives . There are some common , universal , moral values that humans should have . The answers of the hermit include and embrace that common , universal , moral values . He captures the essence of a peaceful and meaningful life . In the story , Tolstoy stresses upon the importance of service to others . Doing good to others can ensure our happiness and it should be ' the pursuit of life ' . The story takes the form of a parable . It is written in a simple but expressive style . Summary of the story
A Tsar seeks to find suitable answers to three important questions . These questions are- ( 1 ) What is the right time to do a particular work ? ( 2 ) Who are the most important people to be with ? ( 3 ) What is the most important thing to do ? He announced ( অ্যানাউন্সড ) a reward for the answers to the questions . The Tsar received many answers from the scholars , but he was not satisfied ( স্যাটিসফায়েড ) . There was a hermit who was known for his wisdom ( উইসডম ) . So he went to the hermit in disguise . At that time , the hermit was digging ( UFR ) flower beds . The Tsar got no answer after asking the questions . But he offered to help the hermit in his work . The hermit accepted the offer . Some time later , a man came out of the nearby woods , bleeding profusely ( প্রোফিউজলি ) from a terrible ( টেরিল্ ) stomach wound . The Tsar took care of him and bandaged ( ব্যান্ডেজড্ ) his wounds . The man survived ( সারভাইভড্ ) and confessed ( কন্‌ফেসড় ) before the Tsar that he had wanted to assassinate ( অ্যাসাসিনেট ) the Tsar in revenge ( রিভেঞ্জ ) . The man now begged mercy and wished to be a faithful ( ফেইফুল ) servant of the Tsar for the rest of his life . The Tsar generously forgave ( ফরগেভ ) the man . Then he requested the hermit for the answers , and the hermit said that the Tsar had already been answered . He explained that- ( a ) the most important time is the present ( now ) , ( b ) the most important person is whoever you are with , ( c ) the most important thing is to do good to the person you are with . Now the Tsar was satisfied .

একজন জার তিনটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রশ্নের উত্তর খোঁজার চেষ্টা করছেন । এই কোনো নির্দিষ্ট কাজ করার সবথেকে উপযুক্ত -- ( ১ ) সময় কোনটি ? ( ২ ) সঙ্গে রাখার জন্য সর্বাপেক্ষা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ কারা ? ( ৩ ) সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ কোন্‌টি ? সঠিক উত্তরের জন্য তিনি পুরস্কার ঘোষণা করেন । জার পণ্ডিতদের কাছ থেকে অনেক উত্তর পেলেন কিন্তু সন্তুষ্ট হলেন না | একজন সাধু ছিলেন যিনি তাঁর জ্ঞানের জন্য প্রসিদ্ধ ছিলেন । তাই তিনি ছদ্মবেশে সেই সাধুর কাছে গেলেন । সেই সময় সাধু ফুলগাছ লাগানোর জন্য মাটি খুঁড়ছিলেন । জার তাঁর প্রশ্নগুলি করার পর কোনো উত্তর পেলেন না । কিন্তু তিনি সাধুকে তাঁর কাজে সাহায্য করার প্রস্তাব দিলেন | সাধুটি তার প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করলেন । কিছুক্ষণ পরে , একটা লোক নিকটবর্তী বন থেকে বেরিয়ে এল , যার পেটের একটি ক্ষতস্থান থেকে প্রচুর রক্তক্ষরণ হচ্ছিল | জার তার সেবাশুশ্ৰূষা করলেন এবং তার ক্ষতস্থান বেঁধে দিলেন । লোকটি বেঁচে গেল এবং জারের সামনে স্বীকার করল যে প্রতিহিংসা চরিতার্থ করার জন্য সে জারকে হত্যা করতে চেয়েছিল । সে এবার ক্ষমা ভিক্ষা করল এবং বাকি জীবন জারের একজন বিশ্বস্ত ভৃত্য হয়ে থাকার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করল । জার উদারভাবে তাকে ক্ষমা করলেন । এরপর জার সাধুকে উত্তর দেওয়ার জন্য অনুরোধ করলেন এবং সাধু বললেন যে জার তার উত্তর ইতিমধ্যেই পেয়ে গেছেন । তিনি ব্যাখ্যা করলেন যে— ( ক ) সর্বাপেক্ষা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় হল বর্তমান ( এখন ) । ( খ ) সর্বাপেক্ষা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি হল যার সঙ্গে আপনি আছেন । ( গ ) সর্বাপেক্ষা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল আপনার সঙ্গে থাকা ব্যক্তিটির উপকার করা । এবার জার সন্তুষ্ট হলেন ।

When the Tsar was not satisfied with the answers of the learned men he decided to consult a hermit , widely renowned for his wisdom . [ জারের মনে যে তিনটি প্রশ্ন এসেছিল সেগুলি ছিল : i . একটি নির্দিষ্ট কাজ শুরু করার সঠিক সময় কী ? ii . কাদের কথা শোনা উচিত আর কাদের এড়িয়ে যাওয়া উচিত ? iii . সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজটি কী ? তার ওই প্রশ্নগুলোর সঠিক উত্তরের দরকার ছিল যাতে তিনি যে কাজেই হাত দিতেন তাতে ব্যর্থ হতেন না । জার পণ্ডিতদের উত্তরে যখন সন্তুষ্ট হতে পারলেন না , তখন তিনি এক সন্ন্যাসী যিনি তার জ্ঞানের জন্যই বিখ্যাত ছিলেন তাঁর কাছে গেলেন ||

Ans . The Tsar went to the hermit because none of the scholars could satisfy his queries ( ক্যোয়ারিজ ) . Their diverse ( ডাইভার্স ) opinions , in fact , increased the Tsar's confusion . So he went to the hermit who was believed to be a wise man .
The hermit received only common folk . That is why the Tsar had to leave aside ( অ্যাসাইড ) his own royal dress and put on simple clothes before meeting the hermit .
The hermit was digging the ground in front of his hut . The Tsar saw him breathing ( ব্রীদিং ) heavily while striking ( স্ট্রাইকিং ) the spade into the ground . The wise man greeted ( গ্ৰীটেড ) the Tsar but went on digging .
[ জার সাধুটির কাছে গিয়েছিলেন কারণ পণ্ডিতদের কেউই তাঁর জিজ্ঞাসার নিরসন করতে পারেননি । তাদের বিভিন্ন রকমের মতামত প্রকৃতপক্ষেজারের বিভ্রান্তিকে আরও বাড়িয়ে তুলেছিল | তাই তিনি সেই সাধুর কাছে গিয়েছিলেন যাকে অত্যন্ত জ্ঞানী বলে সবাই বিশ্বাস করত । সাধু শুধু সাধারণ মানুষদের অভ্যর্থনা করতেন । এই কারণে জার তাঁর রাজকীয় পোশাক সরিয়ে রেখেছিলেন এবং সাধুটির সঙ্গে দেখা করার আগে সাধারণ পোশাক পরেছিলেন । সাধু তার কুটিরের সামনে মাটি খুঁড়ছিলেন । জার দেখলেন যে সাধুটি ঘনঘন শ্বাস নিচ্ছেন যখন তিনি কোদাল দিয়ে মাটি কোপাচ্ছেন | জ্ঞানী লোকটি ( সাধু ) জারকে অভিবাদন জানালেন কিন্তু তার খোঁড়ার কাজ চালিয়ে গেলেন ।

Ans . The Tsar saw that the hermit was quite frail and weak . He was digging the ground in front of his hut . Each time he stuck his spade into the ground , he breathed heavily . The Tsar took pity on the hermit . So , he took the spade  from the hermit and started to dig the ground . He wanted to give some respite to the old man .
It benefitted  him in three ways . Firstly , as he remained busy with his work he did not return and was saved from the possible attack by his sworn enemy . Secondly , he saved his enemy and gained ( গেইনড ) his friendship . Thirdly , he thus got the answers to all his questions .
[ জার দেখেছিলেন যে সাধুটি বেশ রোগা এবং দুর্বল | সাধুটি তার কুঁড়ে ঘরের সামনে মাটি খুঁড়ছিলেন | প্রত্যেকবার কোদাল দিয়ে মাটি কোপানোর সময় শ্রান্তিতে তাঁর ঘনঘন নিশ্বাস পড়ছিল | জার সাধুটির প্রতি করুণাপরবশ হয়েছিলেন | তাই তিনি সাধুটির কাছ থেকে কোদাল নিয়ে মাটি খুঁড়তে শুরু করলেন । তিনি বয়স্ক লোকটিকে একটু রেহাই দিতে চেয়েছিলেন | এটা তিনভাবে তাঁর উপকার করেছিল | প্রথমত , যেহেতু তিনি কাজে ব্যস্ত ছিলেন তাই তিনি ফিরে যেতে পারলেন না এবং ফলে তাঁর চরম শত্রুর সম্ভাব্য আক্রমণের হাত থেকে তিনি বেঁচে গেলেন । দ্বিতীয়ত , তিনি তাঁর শত্রুর প্রাণ বাঁচালেন এবং তার বন্ধুত্ব লাভ করলেন । তৃতীয়ত , এভাবে তিনি তার সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর পেয়েছিলেন ] ]

7. " Forgive me , ' said the bearded man ... " - Who was the bearded man ? Why did he ask for forgiveness ? [ দাড়িওয়ালা লোকটিকে ছিল ? কেন সে ক্ষমাপ্রার্থনা করেছিল ? ]

Ans . The bearded man was an avowed enemy of the Tsar . The Tsar had executed his brother earlier and seized his property .
The man waited in ambush to avenge ( অ্যাভেঞ্জ ) his brother's death , but as the Tsar did not return from the hermit's place , the man came out in search of the Tsar . At this time he came across the bodyguard of the Tsar who recognized the man and wounded him fatally . The man would have died as he was bleeding profusely , but the Tsar became his saviour ( সেভিয়র ) He bandaged the wounds and provided him water and rest with the help of the hermit . Now the man repented ( রিপেন্টেড ) his sin and prayed for the Tsar's forgiveness .
[ দাড়িওয়ালা লোকটি জারের স্বঘোষিত শত্রু ছিল | জার আগে তার ভাইকে হত্যা করেছিলেন এবং তার সম্পত্তি বাজেয়াপ্ত করেছিলেন । লোকটি জারের বিরুদ্ধে তার ভাইয়ের মৃত্যুর প্রতিশোধ নেওয়ার জন্য ওৎ পেতে অপেক্ষা করছিল কিন্তু জার সাধুর কাছ থেকে ফিরে না আসাতে লোকটি তার গোপন আস্তানা থেকে জারকে খোঁজার জন্য বেরিয়ে এসেছিল । এই সময় তার সঙ্গে জারের দেহরক্ষীর দেখা হয়ে যায় , যে লোকটিকে চিনতে পেরে তাকে মারাত্মকভাবে আহত করে । লোকটি হয়ত প্রচণ্ড রক্তক্ষরণে মারাই যেত কিন্তু জার তার রক্ষাকর্তা হয়ে উঠলেন । তিনি লোকটির ক্ষতস্থানে ব্যান্ডেজ বেঁধে দিলেন , তাকে জল দিলেন এবং সাধুর সাহায্যে তার বিশ্রামের ব্যবস্থাও করলেন | এবার লোকটি তার পাপের জন্য অনুতপ্ত হল আর জারের কাছ থেকে ক্ষমাপ্রার্থনা করল ||

The wounded man lay on the bed . Probably there was no spare bed in the room . So the Tsar lay on the floor but enjoyed a sound sleep . • It was morning when the Tsar woke up . He found the wounded man staring at him with shining ( শাইনিং ) eyes . The Tsar took a long time to recollect the incidents of the previous day . He was surprised when the wounded man earnestly ( আর্নেস্টলি ) asked for his forgiveness ( ফরগিভনেস ).
জার সাধুর জায়গায় শ্রমসাধ্য কাজে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন । সাধুর স্পানে তাঁর যে কায়িক শ্রম হয়েছিল এবং আহত লোকটির লুনা করার সময় তার ওপর যে চাপ পড়েছিল , তা তাঁকে অত্যন্ত ক্লান্ত করে তুলেছিল । তার ঘুম পাচ্ছিল এবং তিনি চৌকাঠের ওপর গুটিসুটি মেরে শুয়ে পড়েছিলেন । আহত লোকটি বিছানায় শুয়েছিল । সম্ভবত ঘরে আর অতিরিক্ত বিছানা ছিল না । তাই জার মেঝেতে শুয়েছিলেন এবং গভীর ঘুম উপভোগ করেছিলেন । সকালবেলা জার ঘুম থেকে উঠলেন । তিনি দেখলেন আহত লোকটি তার দিকে উজ্জ্বল চোখে একদৃষ্টে তাকিয়ে আছে । জার অনেকক্ষপ সময় নিয়েছিলেন আগের দিনের অভিজ্ঞতা ধারণ করতে । তিনি অবাক হয়েছিলেন যখন আহত লোকটি আকুলভাবে তার ক্ষমা চেয়েছিল ।

So the man decided to take revenge by killing the Tsar on his way back from the hermit's place . But the Tsar did not return till sunset . The man lost his patience and came out . The Tsar's bodyguard recognized the man and severely wounded him . Now the man was repentant ( রিপেনটেন্ট ) because the Tsar had saved his life by tending his wounds . He asked the Tsar to forgive him and wished to be his loyal servant ever after .
The Tsar was extremely pleased to gain the friendship of an enemy so easily . He forgave the man . He promised to send his servants and his own doctor to attend him . He also promised to give back the man's property .

The presente is the result of our past and our future is the result of our present . So what we do in our present has a huge  impact on our future . The Tsar helped the hermit and the wounded man according to the need of the time . The man remained alive and befriended an enemy . The hermit thus explained the answer he gave .

Ans . The Tsar had three specific questions . But the answers were not found easily . None of the scholars could satisfy the Tsar . So he went to a hermit known for his wisdom . Seeing the hermit working hard , the Tsar did the work for him . This incidentally helped him to make peace with his avowed enemy who came to kill the Tsar but was saved by the Tsar . The hermit elucidated the entire incident to show that the most important time is present , the most important person is the present associate and the most important thing is to do good to that associate . Thus the Tsar found out the answers from his own experience .

Ans . It seems obvious that the most important person in the story is the hermit . It's true that the Tsar was sincerely pursuing ( পারসিউয়িং ) the answers to his questions , but the hermit played the pivotal role of a teacher and a guide . He made the Tsar learn the answers from his own experiences . If the hermit had continued working , the Tsar would not have had a chance to stay and help . As a result the Tsar on his return journey would have been killed . The wounded man was an agent through whom the Tsar got his answers . But the hermit with his wisdom interpreted ( ইন্টারপ্রিটেড ) the events . So he is the most important person in the story .

Ans , The Tsar's third question was about the most important thing to do at a particular time . The hermit suggested that the most important thing to do is to make people around us happy . The hermit said that the Tsar had shown sympathy by digging the seed bed . What the Tsar hadn't known was that his avowed ( অ্যাভাওড ) enemy had been planning a surprise attack on him . If the Tsar hadn't decided to help the hermit , he would have returned early and got killed . Again , if the Tsar had not helped the wounded man , the man , his enemy would not have made peace with him so eagerly ( ইগারলি ) . So the most necessary thing for a man is to help others around him . This would keep him safe from trouble .

14. Why do you think that the hermit did not give direct answers to the Tsar's questions till the end ? [ সাধু কেন শেষপর্যন্ত রাজার প্রশ্নের সরাসরি উত্তর দেননি বলে তুমি মনে কর ? ]
Ans . The hermit was a wise man and knew that first hand experience is required for the answers to the Tsar's questions . Despite the Tsar's repeated requests the hermit did not give prompt ( 2 ) answers . The Tsar saved the life of an unknown enemy and made peace with him . Then only the hermit told him that his questions had been answered . The hermit could have explained the answers earlier but he knew that one learns only through personal experience . This deep insight ( ইনসাইট ) about human psychology ( সাইকোলজি ) prompted him not to give the Tsar a pre - conceived ( প্রি - কনসিভড্ ) answer . He wanted the Tsar to learn from his own experiences .
[ সাধুটি একজন জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি ছিলেন এবং তিনি জানতেন জারের প্রশ্নের উত্তরের জন্য প্রত্যক্ষ অভিজ্ঞতার প্রয়োজন । জার তাঁকে উত্তরগুলি দেওয়ার জন্য বারংবার অনুরোধ করা সত্ত্বেও তিনি জারের প্রশ্নের চটজলদি উত্তর দেননি । জার তার এক অপরিচিত শত্রুর জীবন রক্ষা করলেন আর তার সঙ্গে শান্তিস্থাপন করলেন । তখনই সাধু জারকে বললেন যে জার তাঁর প্রশ্নের উত্তর পেয়ে গেছেন । সাধুটি হয়তো জারকে আগেই উত্তর দিয়ে দিতে পারতেন কিন্তু তিনি জানতেন যে কোনো ব্যক্তি কেবল ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতার মাধ্যমেই ভালোভাবে কিছু শিখতে পারে । মনুষ্য মনস্তত্ত্ব নিয়ে সাধুর এই গভীর উপলব্ধিই সাধুকে প্রণোদিত করেছিল জারকে মনগড়া উত্তর না দেওয়ার জন্য । তিনি চেয়েছিলেন জার তাঁর অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে শিখুন । ]
