Nationality: British

Early life: Born in Wales to Norwegian parents, served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He bacame a flying ace and an intelligence officer, rising to the rank of wing commander. Roald Dahl rose to prominence in the 1940s and became one of the world's best-selling authors.

Genre: Novelist, Short story writer, screenwriter, poet.

Notable works: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits, George's Marvellous Medicine, The Big Friendly Giant and so on.

Writing Technique: His short stories are characterised by unexpected endings and his children's books are known for their unsentimental dark humour. He has been referred to as 'One of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th cnetury".
